Panoramas : Panoramas are fun! Here are some I made while sitting around my brother-in-laws house here in Lafayette, Indiana. Home of the Purdue Boiler Makers, I might add.

Most are 3-4 photos I took and stitched together to create one image. See if you can see where they're stitched...hopefully you can't too easily. I don't own a tripod yet, so they could be better.

2007: Some of My Favorites. : These are a few of my favorite sports photographs from the past year, 2007. When these were taken, I think the lighting was nice, my focus was on, and the camera settings that I chose were pretty well done. I am a beginner, but I'm proud of these photos and I'm improving pretty quickly, too.

I think that great athletes are easy to photograph because they usually look...athletic! So I'd like to thank the Warrior athletes for playing with emotion, skill, and desire. Your years of practice and hard work really show through in these photos.

Note: Anyone who knows me is aware that basketball is one of my favorite sports. The reason that there are going to be very few basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and night football photos is because the noise level on my Nikon D80 is pretty poor. I have a new Nikon D300 ordered that should REALLY improve my indoor photos.

Low indoor lighting makes most of the photos appear grainy, so I use Noiseware programs to clean them up. That gets rid of the noise, but the trade off is lost detail and sharpness and the pictures are not as impressive. I hope to improve my skill level and my equipment in them coming years, so that I can get better photos for the athletes of WB.

Nikon 70-300mm VR Test Pictures : I'm having a lot of fun with my new telephoto lens. Here are some of the results I've gotten with the VR feature and no tripod. Each set of pictures is in a series of three. The first is 70mm, the second is 300mm, and the last is the 300mm photo with digital cropping/zoom.

These pictures were taken from behind the Giants dugout during batting practice, and from our seats behing the Pirate dugout during the game. Clicking from the 70mm to the 300mm with digital zoom really is dramatic. Nikkor lenses are pretty impressive.

Nikon 70-300 VR : I just bought a Nikon 70-300mm VRII lens from H&B Photo in New York. I've taken two pictures with it, and I can already recommend that you immediately buy one, if you have a Nikon DSLR.

This lens has vibration reduction. This is because with SLR cameras, if there is low light, the shutter stays open for a long time. If you shake the camera even the tiniest bit, the photo will blur. This means to take a picture in low light, you basically needed a tripod...until VR.

I turned off the lights and took two handheld pictures. One is with the VR switched off, and one is with the VRII on. The difference totally justifies the price of this lens for me. I took night pictures from Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh that needed a tripod, now, I shouldn't need one with this lens. Also, I recently posted some photos from the Rowland Theatre with the lights dimmed. They were pretty shaky, but they should be really sharp now.

It's raining, so these were the only two photos I could think of to show the VR. I can't wait to take it outside and test it at sunset. I wonder if this lens will take a handheld moon photo? That would be impressive!

My wife and I are going to see the Pirates play a double header against the Giants and Barry Bonds next week. I hope to have some great photos with the 300mm range. My old lens was only 135mm at the long end of its range, so this is twice the reach.

Moon Over Philipsburg : I just bought a Mono/Tripod in Altoona yesterday. I bought it at Ritz Camera in Boscov's Dept. Store. They are really friendly and helpful there!

Anyway, the first project I wanted to try with a tripod was to photograph the Moon. I think my 18-135mm lens isn't quite long enough to get the job done, but I'm still pretty happy. The hand held photos I tried a few weeks ago were just glowing white blobs, so this is better!

I'm hoping to find a Nikkor 70-300 VRII lens in Pittsburgh. It will have about twice the range that my 18-135mm can offer. If I can swing the price, there should be some nice moon pics, soon! Also, I got a few great books at Barnes and Noble that should help me improve. Photography is fun!

There should be some Steel City pictures soon, too. I think our Hotel room has wireless, so I'll try to get them up Thursday night. We'll be seeing three Pirate games and I LOVE taking baseball pictures. Also, I'm hoping to get a few pictures from Mount Washington, photograph a few 1800's era victorian bridges, and if they'll let me, photograph our chef at the Nakama Steak House doing the Benihana thing. You know, where they throw your food around on the grill and shoot fire at you and stuff?
